Ignition Timing
(V.8 Engines)

Distributors and Dealers are advised that when the ignition timing is carried out the use of a timing light is advised as described on page B.52 of the 2J V.8 Service Manual.
IT for some reason the ignition timing is set by visually observing when the points open this must be effected on the second pair of points to open and not the first. The collapse of the current in primary windings of the coil does not take place until the second pair of contacts open.

Looking from the front of the engine it will be noted that the pair of contacts on the right of the distributor open first followed by the pair on the left.
The reason for using two pair of contact points which “overlap” is to allow a greater closed period (dwell angle) than would be possible if only one pair of contacts were used.
It is, of course, necessary to set the contact breaker gap to the correct figure of .014”– .016” (,36–,41 mm) for each pair of points before checking the ignition timing. ___________________________________________________________________
